Thomas Jefferson Responds to Eshoo and McNerny

On Tuesday, Democrat Congresspersons Anna Eshoo and Jerry McNerney wrote identical letters to the heads of the various news and cable outlets asking for them to share the moral or ethical principles they apply in deciding which channels to carry. Eshoo's and McNerney's goal was to create methods by which the government may shield the tender ears of the general American public from certain opinions and commentaries-namely, conservative ones. To hear them defend their stance, "Our country’s public discourse is plagued by misinformation, disinformation, conspiracy theories, and lies . . . [that] undergird the radicalization of seditious individuals who committed acts of insurrection on January 6th, and . . . contributes to a growing distrust of public health measures to crush the pandemic." In fact, according to Eshoo and McNerney, "Experts have noted that the right-wing media ecosystem is 'much more susceptible...to disinformation, lies, and half truths.'" But Thomas Jefferson devoted a great deal of thought to the question of government interference on the pursuit of truth, and what he had to say is invaluable to today's discussions. . .
