FOLLOW THE SCIENCE STRAIGHT TO NEWSOM'S PARTY
Julio Gonzalez, M.D., J.D.
Follow the science, the Left loves to say, but if you do, it will lead you straight to Governor Newsom's maskless party in California.
As I have detailed in Coronalessons, when the Left speaks of following the science, it doesn't actually espouse an allegiance to scientific principles or objective data analyysis. It is merely asking the rest of us to submit to whichever their favorite statistic of the day may be that suits their needs. What the Left quotes is rarely science. We know this because if they applied reasoning and scientific inquiry to their positions, they would become members of the Right.
"Use a mask!" the Left declares, even though the evidence in support of such a blanket statement is wanton. Where there may be support for mask use in close quarters in indoor settings the Left morphs into a policy of mandatory mask usage enforced with fines and jail time. Where the data indicate that social distancing is helpful in preventing the spread of COVID-19, the Left turns into a cancellation of Thanksgiving. And where there is evidence that large gatherings may provide the opportunity for the virus to spread, the Left closes down churches and synagogues.
No. There is no support for the Left's draconian policies, least of all from the science it seems to worship. The case in point is in California where Governor Newsome has issued a curfew and a stay-at home order affecting the forty-one of the state's fifty-eight counties. The move represents a kneejerk reaction to the recent increase in the prevalence of cases seen throughout the nation.
The fact is that there is little evidence to support such a measure where the virus has already inculcated itself within the population. In fact, there is just as much evidence supporting a more permissive governmental approach. But such is the Left's selective science, particularly when the intervention is set to expire in one month. Stated differently, it you think that a month's worth of inconsistently applied lockdowns and curfews lasting 30 days is going to make a hill of beans difference in the epidemiological behavior of this virus, then I insist that you wear your mask when driving alone in your car with your windows rolled up and, please, above all, stay in California!
And let's not forget to add hypocrisy to stupidity through the Governor's attendance of a crowded party of high-rollers where not a mask was seen, not even on the Governor. Yes, Governor Newsom has already apologized, the first such heart-felt apology delivered with a smile. But worry not, despite the Governor's apparent disregard for his own science and ensuing advice, the science was there, as it was well represented by the honorable presence of the Dustin Corcoran and Janus Norman, the California Medical Association's chief executive office and its senior vice president.
Honestly, I couldn't care less who is partying with the California Governor and whether they are wearing masks. Seldom have we encountered such insignificance peddled as news. But, when that governor and a state's leading medical organization spends a large percentage of its time shaming others into succumbing to their mandates while holding themselves out to be above their "science," then I care. I care a lot, particularly when it's my own colleagues and their representatives that are engaged in such opportunistic quackery.
