by Julio Gonzalez, M.D., J.D. On Sunday, the struggling New York Times(NYT)delivered an in depth investigation of President Donald J. Trump's "tax-return data extending over more than two decades." And although the NYT "data" did not include information regarding his personal returns for 2018 or 2019, after conducting its exhaustive, caustic and highly partisan review, it reached a number of unsubstantiated but official-sounding conclusions. Among these, the newspaper claims that the President did not pay taxes, that the President experienced a chronic trend of revenue loss indicating his lack of business prowess, and that the President has been riding a myth of success largely assembled during his time at The Apprentice that has falsely elevated him to a level of stardom and grandeur that is largely undeserved. But what is substantially more telling than what the NYT reports is what it does not say. To understand the full implications of what the NYT does not claim in its piece one needs to acknowledge its position regarding the President. The NYT despises President Trump. Since the moment Mr. Trump took that ride down the golden escalator, the NYT, along with every liberal outlet, has been obsessing over his destruction, a mania that has clouded its judgment and dissolved any semblance of journalistic integrity the newspaper still retains. For the past five years (yes, even before the President was elected), along with its henchmen, the NYT has been on a mission to destroy, not only Mr. Trump's presidency, but his very existence. Let's not forget that this is the third time, the NYT has attacked Mr. Trump over his taxes without landing a punch. Also recall that the NYT was a prime promoter of the Russia hoax. It was a proponent of impeachment. It actively sold the false narrative of collusion with Russia and a quid pro quo with Ukraine. And it was a distributor of the theory that President Trump had engaged in illegal activities in order to earn him a seat at the Oval Office. So vitriolic and aggressive was the NYT against him that if it had found the President to engage in any illegality, it surely would have already vociferously reported it. Enter the present discussion maliciously brought to the forefront by that same rabid NYT. Like in its previous dealings with the President, if the NYT had actually gotten its hands on any official or quasi-official records suggestive of malfeasance, it would have published it while making its accusations against him. Instead, although the NYT makes multiple references to the President's ongoing audits, it fails to identify any evidence of illegality. Moreover, it specifically states that the documents in its possession fail to reveal "any previously unreported connection to Russia." In short, instead of taking a joyous victory lap against the President, the NYT is left merely with ethos-laden lamentations of how little the President paid in taxes compared to how much the NYT feels would have been appropriate for a man of his stature. As to the subjective displeasure the NYT voices regarding the little amount it claims the President ended up paying, its ire should rightfully be directed, not at Mr. Trump, who was merely obeying the law, but at former Vice President Joe Biden who spent the last forty-seven years creating it. If a billionaire like President Trump was able to pay too little in taxes, then it was because of people like Biden who created laws that legally allowed him to do so. Whether the NYT knows it or not, it is actually making a compelling case against Mr. Biden who created the laws, not one against Mr. Trump who obeyed them.
