Hasbro Neutralizes Mr. Potato Head's Gender, Then Wobbles.
On Thursday, Hasbro, the maker of the Mr. Potato Head doll, announced that it was renaming the iconic toy, "Potato Head", in order to make sure that "all feel welcome in the Potato Head world," and to "promote gender equality and inclusion." This is not an issue regarding the possibility excluding girls from playing with the dolls as Mr. Potato Head also has a female version, Mrs. Potato Head.
Of course, the announcement was met with outrage from the overwhelming majority of the market that still maintains its sanity forcing this clarification from Hasbro via Twitter: “While it was announced today that the POTATO HEAD brand name & logo are dropping the ‘MR.’ I yam proud to confirm that MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD aren’t going anywhere and will remain MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD.”
According Robert Passikof, a marketing consultant, Hasbro undertook the action in the hopes of broadening the franchise. Of course, the questions are, how much and at what cost?
