Transgender Bill Passes in the House
The House passed a bill designed to impose sweeping legal protections on LGBTQ individuals through an amendment to the 1964 Civil Rights Bill. The vote was 224-206. The bill is a cause of great concern to religious freedom advocates since the same provision was used in state law to spur the forceful participation of artists in LGBTQ events that go against their sincerely held religious beliefs, and there are also concerns about the effects the bill may have on children's rights and women's sports. Despite the win, the vote may actually represent waning support for the bill, as a similar bill had garnered 58% support last year compared to 52% this year. Additionally, the Christian Family Coalition of Florida reports that all three Miami representatives voted in favor last year, but in opposition this year.
